Approved undergraduate courses must be full-time, lead to a major education and training award, at Level 6 (Higher Certificate), Level 7 (Ordinary Bachelor Degree) or Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degree), in line with the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) or equivalent and, as specified in the Student Support Regulations, must be provided in a University, Institute of Technology or other Higher Education Institution, e.g. College of Education.

The Student Support Regulations also identify a number of specific courses in other Higher Education Institutions that are approved for grant funding. Only the specified courses in each such institution are eligible.
