Adjacency refers to the distance between your normal residence and your college and is determined by measuring the distance of the shortest most direct route from your normal residence to your college.
If you’re eligible for a maintenance grant, it will be paid at either the adjacent rate or the non-adjacent rate.
The adjacent rate is paid when your college is 45km or less from your normal residence
The non-adjacent rate is paid when your college is more than 45km from your normal residence.
Where is my normal residence?
If you’re a dependent student, your normal residence will be the permanent or home address of your parents.
If you’re an independent student, your normal residence will be your permanent or home address.
How is the distance from my normal residence to my college measured?
It is measured in line with guidelines agreed by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
The distance of the shortest most direct route from your normal residence to the college campus where your course takes place is measured.
The distance is measured through Google Maps using specific parameters as follows:
The parameters which result in the shortest distance are used by SUSI as the measurement of the shortest most direct route from your normal residence to your college campus.
If you have provided an Eircode for the address of your normal residence, it will be used in measuring the distance through Google Maps. If you’re attending a course in the State, the Eircode of your college campus will also be used in the measurement.
